X-AMIN PCX, laboratory scale phase contrast optimised x-ray system for 2D imaging and 3D tomography
The PCX is the only commercial in-line laboratory scale phase contrast X-ray system available today.

Using XRT's patented imaging technology, including an X-ray source of high lateral spacial coherence, proven phase retrieval software and a high resolution large array detector, PCX may be configured to acquire absorption images, phase and absorption images, or images with a very pronounced phase signature. Phase plays a large part in producing images of high contrast - particularly from structures which are weakly absorbing and thus not amenable to imaging by conventional X-ray techniques.
Areas where phase contrast is extremely beneficial include structural and fibre filled polymers, wood products, seed technology, food technology, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, bone morphology, small animal imaging and specimen pathology.
Examples are below, these and more at high resolution planar (2D) images are in our Image Gallery.

A schematic of a system is shown below:

Superior imaging performance and very simple operation
- Ultra-stable X-ray source optimised for resolution between 20 and 70kVp provides excellent phase and absorption contrast imaging performance
- Vibration damped common rail sub-frame for long term positional stability ensures great 2D imaging and accurate tomographic reconstructions
- Very high resolution, indirect detection, cooled CCD camera for great images
- Range of linear sample manipulators up to 325mm travel for flexible sample handling in 2D imaging and ultra-precision sample rotation stage for (optional) 3D ) tomography
- Radiation-proof enclosure with fail-safe interlocks for complete operator safety
- Software controlled motorised manipulator and camera positioning for easy optimisation of imaging geometry—magnification, resolution and phase signature
- Software control of all operational setting for speedy results
- Sophisticated imaging software for superior 2D and (optional) 3D image acquisition and image processing
